Thakoon Panichgul, one of the most admired of the new generation of designers bringing Hermes Handbags to American fashion, opened his fall show with a spare gray wool-felt jacket and ivory skirt that looked as old-fashioned as a Republican cloth coat. Two minutes later, he was sending out models swathed in black bonded-velvet studded with disco-ball mirrors, and then a knit fox cape in glaring orange and green, like the feathers of a parrot.
The Thakoon collection, a mind warp and yet still pretty great, grabbed your attention foremost because Hermes Wallets suggested a designer caught in the midst of competing forces, torn between the reality of safe, wearable clothes and the desire to create something that will look exciting on a runway.

This is where fashion is today, as designers, under pressure, try to answer to everyone: customers, critics and a new first lady, who happens to admire new designers, so there had better be a Burberry Handbags or two in her style. Mr. Panichgul had options for all of them.

What tied the disparate looks together was Mr. Panichgul’s desire to tone down the hard edge of the conservative clothes and the party styles, in some cases by stripping away fabrics, treating them roughly. His Burberry Wallets were slashed at the sides to create ruffles, with sheer insets underneath so that they didn’t look so ladylike.

Inevitably those dresses invite comparisons to Lanvin, but what keeps Mr. Panichgul’s work fresh is his innovative construction. Chanel Handbags was seen most clearly in an ivory double-face wool dress inset with black knit bands at the sides, like the waist of a bomber jacket.

The recession has effectively reminded designers that people are looking for something new from fashion — a reason to be optimistic. Chris Benz answered that call with a collection that was so happy, it almost seemed medicated.

“The last time we had this feeling of a shady economy was in the late ’70s, when uptown women were escaping to the big clubs downtown,” he said.

One could argue that there will be few customers for an electric-red foiled-leather mini-shift or a yellow sheared-mink peacoat, but those customers will appreciate Mr. Benz for giving them a reason to go out.

The same could be said for Peter Som, who lost his backing last year as well as a second job designing for Bill Blass (the house closed). While those were disappointing developments, Mr. Som may be better off. Liberated from answering to too many bosses who had steered him toward ladylike clothes, he pulled together about 25 looks that were off the wall.

A toile print dress with bright grosgrain and damask borders was topped with a blue broadtail shrug that had iridescent fox shoulders, like Louis Vuitton Handbags in Technicolor. Even a simple gray shift was jazzed up with point d’esprit lace insets to highlight the darts.

Matthew Terry, the designer of a new label called Coventry, showed fantastic knits. A severely gorgeous stretch cashmere knit dress with a little shrug — all one piece, folded over from the neck — must have required a NASA engineer to execute.

Marc Jacobs has thrown the fashion world for a loop by starting his Replica Handbags on time, and though aggravating, this did result in the unforgettable sighting of a six-foot-tall woman wearing a Chanel jacket and unreasonably tall heels spitting out her gum and sprinting the last block to Mr. Jacobs’s presentation of his Marc by Marc Jacobs collection.

Fake Handbags was worth it, for Mr. Jacobs put on one of his liveliest shows in a while. This was what is known as a shopping collection, in which the clothes were more important than big ideas about nightclubbing during darker times. He had a lot to offer: darling coats that flounced out at the waist, Punky Brewster tights and a sweater with a bright blooming flower across the belly.
